Insurance, Decoded

Insurance lingo,
without the jargon.

A quick guide to the lines of business you'll hear us talk about, explained in plain English.

General Liability

The foundation of every business policy.

General Liability protects your business from third-party bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury claims that arise from your operations, your premises, or your products.

Hover the glowing dots to see real examples
Slip & Fall Covers medical bills and injury claims if a guest slips on a wet floor, trips on a mat, or falls on an unsafe surface on your premises.
Products Liability Protects you if something you served or sold — food, a drink, or a product — causes illness or injury to a customer.
Bodily Injury to a Guest Pays for third-party injuries that happen because of your operations, like a guest being burned by spilled coffee or hit by a dropped tray.
Advertising Injury Covers claims of libel, slander, copyright infringement, or misleading advertising that arise from your signage, menus, or marketing.
Premises Hazard Pays for third-party injuries caused by hazards inside your space, like a falling light fixture, a loose handrail, or unsafe lighting.

Terms, conditions, and exclusions may vary by policy and carrier. The examples above are for informational purposes only and do not guarantee coverage.

Commercial Property

Covers the physical things your business owns.

Commercial Property Insurance protects the building you own or lease and everything inside — inventory, equipment, furniture, signage, and tenant improvements. If a covered loss like fire, wind, theft, or vandalism happens, the policy pays to repair or replace what was lost.

Hover the glowing dots to see what's typically covered
Building Coverage Pays to repair or rebuild the structure itself — walls, roof, floors, permanent fixtures, and built-in systems — if it's damaged by a covered cause of loss.
Business Personal Property Covers the contents of your business — inventory, furniture, equipment, computers, tools, and supplies — owned by you or in your care.
Outdoor Signs Specifically protects your exterior signage, often with its own sublimit. Wind, vandalism, vehicle impact, and storms can all damage signs.
Tenant Improvements & Betterments If you lease your space, this covers build-outs you've paid for — counters, flooring, lighting, and interior finishes you installed but don't legally own.
Equipment & Systems HVAC, electrical, and permanent equipment attached to the building are generally part of Building Coverage. Equipment Breakdown can be added for mechanical/electrical failure.

Terms, conditions, and exclusions may vary by policy and carrier. The examples above are for informational purposes only and do not guarantee coverage. Settlement (ACV vs Replacement Cost), form (Basic, Broad, or Special), and sublimits all affect what actually pays at claim time.

Commercial Umbrella

Extra liability limits that kick in when others run out.

A Commercial Umbrella sits on top of your primary liability policies — General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Employer's Liability. When a major claim blows through the underlying limits, the umbrella steps in next, usually in $1M increments.

Why it matters

A single large liability claim can easily exceed what your primary policies alone would cover. An umbrella is a low-cost way to add meaningful protection without overhauling your whole program.

Common Uses

  • Construction jobs requiring $5M+ limits
  • Businesses with fleet & driver exposure
  • Commercial landlords & property owners
  • Contract requirements from bigger clients
Commercial Auto

Liability and physical damage for business-use vehicles.

Commercial Auto is written on any vehicle owned or used by a business — service vans, delivery trucks, company cars, contractor pickups. Personal auto policies almost always exclude business use, which is why a proper commercial auto policy is critical.

Hover the glowing dots to see what each coverage does
Liability Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to someone else while operating a business vehicle — from a fender bender in a parking lot to a serious at-fault collision.
Physical Damage Collision and comprehensive coverage for the business vehicle itself — repairs or replacement if it's damaged in a crash, by weather, theft, vandalism, or hitting something on the road.
Hired & Non-Owned Auto Extends your liability to rented vehicles and employee-owned cars used on company business. Critical if your team ever runs errands in their own car or rents trucks for jobs.
Medical Payments Pays medical bills for the driver and passengers in your vehicle after an accident — regardless of who was at fault. Kicks in quickly, without a fight over liability.
Cargo Coverage (side note) Commercial auto doesn't cover the goods inside. If you're hauling freight, inventory, tools, or customer property, add Motor Truck Cargo or Inland Marine to protect what's in the truck.

Terms, conditions, and exclusions may vary by policy and carrier. The examples above are for informational purposes only and do not guarantee coverage. Symbol selection (1, 7, 8, 9) drives who and what is covered — we'll help you pick the right one.

Workers' Compensation

State by state. Not one-size-fits-all.

Workers' Comp is state-mandated coverage that pays medical bills, lost wages, and rehab costs when an employee is hurt on the job. What most business owners miss: you must list every state where you have employees, monopolistic states play by entirely different rules, and the policy's two parts carry very different limits.

Hover the glowing dots to understand how WC really works
Specify Every State Your WC policy must list every state where employees work. Hire in an unlisted state and you have zero coverage there — even if that state legally requires it.
Monopolistic States Ohio, Washington, North Dakota & Wyoming don't allow private WC insurers. You must buy from the state fund — and add a "Stop Gap" endorsement to get Employer's Liability coverage there.
Part One — Statutory Limits No fixed dollar cap. Whatever your state's law requires, the carrier pays — medical, wage replacement, rehab, death benefits. The statute defines it all, and it varies by state.
Part Two — Employer's Liability Covers lawsuits where an employee claims your negligence worsened the injury. Standard limits are $100K / $500K / $100K — but high-risk industries routinely buy $500K or $1M EL.
No-Fault by Design An injured employee doesn't need to prove anyone was negligent. They file a claim, the carrier pays medical and wage benefits, and your business is shielded from most injury lawsuits.

Terms, conditions, and exclusions may vary by policy and carrier. Monopolistic state rules are subject to legislative change. The examples above are for informational purposes only and do not guarantee coverage.

Inland Marine

Coverage for property that moves.

Despite the name, Inland Marine has nothing to do with boats. It covers business property that isn't tied to a fixed location — tools on a job site, equipment in a truck, goods in transit, and specialty items that travel with your operation. Standard commercial property policies don't cover these situations, which is exactly where Inland Marine steps in.

Typical items covered

Contractor tools and equipment, portable electronics, mobile medical equipment, fine art in transit, cargo in your own trucks, and property at job sites or trade shows.

Who it's for

  • Contractors & trade professionals
  • Photographers, film crews, event pros
  • Jewelers and gallery owners
  • Anyone hauling their own cargo
Cyber Liability

Protection when your business gets breached.

Cyber Liability covers the financial fallout of a data breach, ransomware attack, or cyber incident. That includes forensic investigation, legal fees, customer notification, credit monitoring, regulatory fines, and business income loss while you recover. In today's environment, any business that stores customer data, accepts payments online, or relies on email is exposed.

First-party vs. third-party

First-party covers your own losses (downtime, ransom, data restoration). Third-party covers claims from customers and partners whose data was exposed. Most policies include both.

Common triggers

  • Phishing attacks & wire fraud
  • Ransomware locking systems
  • Employee data theft or mishandling
  • Customer payment data breach
Professional Liability (E&O)

When a mistake in your work leads to a lawsuit.

Also called Errors & Omissions, Professional Liability protects service-based businesses from claims of negligence, missed deadlines, bad advice, or failure to deliver promised services. General Liability doesn't cover this — if your work is what causes the loss, you need E&O.

Covers

Defense costs, settlements, and judgments related to claims that your professional services caused a client financial harm — regardless of whether you actually made a mistake.

Essential for

  • Attorneys, accountants, consultants
  • Tech companies & software developers
  • Real estate agents & brokers
  • Architects, engineers, designers

Our office is at 6000 Leavenworth Road, Suite N, Kansas City, Kansas 66104. You can also reach us by phone, text, or WhatsApp at 913-490-9050, or by email at contact@conexionins.com. We are licensed and serve clients across Kansas, Missouri, Texas, and multiple other states.
Absolutely, yes. We have markets for all kinds of situations, and we're able to find competitive rates regardless of your circumstances. A driver's license is not a requirement to get insured. Reach out and we'll find you the right coverage.
No, and if you have business insurance and aren't happy with your current situation, we'd actually recommend switching before your policy expires. We handle the entire switching process for you, so you don't have to deal with long certificate turnaround times or hold-ups. Our clients get instant 24/7 access to all their policy documents, including certificates of insurance, through our client portal, so the transition is smooth and fast.
Going directly to a carrier like Progressive or GEICO is an option, but most people who do eventually switch to an independent broker because they weren't being serviced. When you buy direct, you get a 1-800 number. When something goes wrong, or when you need to file a claim, there is no one in your corner advocating for you. An independent broker acts as a neutral third party who can push back on behalf of the client, help navigate the claims process, and make sure you're being treated fairly. That is something you simply won't get from a direct carrier. On top of that, we still offer the same convenience. You do not have to call anyone. You can get your quote right now online, or reach us by text or WhatsApp at any time. We just also happen to be there when it actually matters.
Platforms like biBERK, Next, Hiscox, and other direct-to-consumer options are convenient and can be an okay starting point for very small operations. What they don't give you is guidance. Those platforms hand you a list of endorsements and exclusions and expect you to know what each one means — and we regularly see business owners end up with policies that quietly exclude the work they actually do, which can render the coverage useless when a claim shows up. The value we bring is the expertise sitting between you and the policy. It doesn't have to be complicated: we offer the same convenience, you can submit your quote online in minutes, but instead of it landing in an algorithm, one of our expert producers reviews it, flags anything that doesn't fit your operation, and makes sure the policy you end up with actually protects the business you're running.
Yes, absolutely. It is completely okay if you have no prior insurance history or even a bad driving record. We work with a wide range of carriers that specialize in every kind of situation, including non-standard and first-time buyers. Reach out and we will find the right coverage for where you are today.
Yes. If you are not happy with your current broker, we make it easy to transfer your existing policy to us without having to redo or rewrite anything. You keep your coverage, and we take over the service. Click here to start the transfer with a quick e-signed Agent of Record form.
